What is involved in traditional LASIK?
Traditional LASIK is a two-step process. In the first step, the LASIK eye surgeon uses a special surgical instrument called the microkeratome to create a thin flap in the cornea of the eye. In the second step,the excimer laser is used to precisely reshape the inner surface of the cornea. Dr.Tylock has performed the traditional LASIK procedure thousands of times at our facility serving Dallas and Fort Worth laser eye surgery patients.
For the correction of nearsightedness a LASIK surgeon uses an excimer laser to flatten the center of the cornea, and for farsightedness the surgeon makes the cornea more convex or steeper by treating in the periphery. These changes enable light rays to focus more directly on the retina, so images are in better focus. Once the LASIK eye surgeon treats the inner surface of the cornea, the protective flap of the cornea is gently folded back into place. No stitches or shots are used during the LASIK procedure, and most patients enjoy improved vision as soon as one day after the procedure.

Is traditional LASIK still available?
While it typically provides very good results, the traditional LASIK eye surgery procedure can cause complications because it is difficult to ensure an accurate depth and consistent thickness of the corneal flap with the blade technology. This procedure is surgeon dependent and requires extensive training and experience with the use of the microkeratome. Dr. Tylock used this traditional procedure up until 2002 when he aquired the superior IntraLase technology.
With the introduction of the IntraLase all laser IntraLASIK procedure, now featured at our laser center serving Dallas and Fort Worth area, it is no longer necessary to use the microkeratome blade device. Complications from creating the corneal flap are virtually eliminated by using the IntraLase® laser. Traditional Microkeratome Blade
The microkeratome is an instrument that holds a surgical blade and is operated by hand or a motor. The surgical blade creates the corneal flap, leaving an uncut section to serve as the flap’s hinge. The flap is then folded back to expose the underlying corneal layer where the excimer laser is used to reshape the corneal curvature.
