Your LASIK recovery, day by day

Procedure Day
Day 0 – Procedure Day
Clear vision begins – followed by rest
The procedure itself takes 10–15 minutes for both eyes. Immediately after, you’ll rest briefly at our Irving or McKinney office. Many patients notice improved vision before leaving. Eyes will feel tired, watery, and may be light-sensitive. Your driver takes you home. Rest the remainder of the day with eyes closed when comfortable – napping helps. Use your prescribed eye drops as directed, beginning immediately.
✓ Rest at home ✓ Drops begin ✗ No driving ✗ No screen time ✗ No rubbing eyes
Day 1
Day 1 – Next Morning
First follow-up – most patients can drive
Your next-morning appointment at Tylock Nasser Vision takes 15–20 minutes. We confirm your vision is improving and examine the corneal flap. Most patients see 20/40 or better at this visit and are cleared to drive. Workday return depends on your job – desk work and remote work are typically fine. Avoid screens for extended periods if eyes feel tired or strained. Wear UV-protective sunglasses outdoors – DFW sun is intense and UV protection supports healing.
✓ Drive (if cleared) ✓ Return to office work ~ Limited screen time ✗ No swimming ✗ No eye makeup
Days 2–7
Days 2–7 – First Week
Vision steadily sharpens – most discomfort resolves
Mild dry eye, occasional fluctuations in sharpness, and some light sensitivity are normal and expected in the first week. These are not signs of a problem – they reflect normal corneal surface healing. Continue all prescribed drops on schedule. Artificial tears help with dry eye symptoms, which are common in DFW’s low-humidity environment. Resume light physical activity (walking, light cardio) by day 3. Avoid anything that puts pressure on your eyes.
✓ Light cardio/walking ✓ Driving ~ Vision may fluctuate ✗ No gym (sweat in eyes) ✗ No contact sports ✗ No pools or lakes
Week 2
Week 2 – Two Weeks Post-Op
Most restrictions lift – eyes feeling nearly normal
By week two, most patients feel essentially normal. Antibiotic drops are typically discontinued. Steroid drops may continue per your specific protocol. Eye makeup can typically resume after day 10–14. Swimming in treated pools may be permitted at two weeks – your post-op team will confirm at your 1-week visit. Lake, river, and ocean swimming require additional waiting. Most gym activities resume, though avoiding direct eye trauma remains important.
✓ Gym activities ✓ Eye makeup (after day 14) ✓ Pool swimming (if cleared) ~ Artificial tears as needed ✗ No lake/river/ocean
Weeks 3–4
Weeks 3–6 – Vision Stabilizing
Full activity resumes – vision approaching final outcome
Vision continues to sharpen as the corneal surface heals completely. Minor fluctuations or continued dry eye symptoms are still within the normal range. Your 1-month follow-up visit occurs in this window – we measure your visual acuity and compare it to your pre-op baseline. Most patients see 20/20 or better. Outdoor activities including lake access and most sports are cleared by week 4 for the majority of patients.
✓ Full gym/cardio ✓ Open water swimming ✓ 1-month follow-up visit ~ Continue artificial tears
3–6 Months
Months 3–6 – Final Outcome
Vision fully stable – no restrictions
Complete corneal healing is finished. Your 3-month (and sometimes 6-month) follow-up visit confirms your final visual acuity. Nearly all patients have reached their target outcome by this point. Contact sports and activities with direct eye trauma risk are now cleared in most cases. Dry eye symptoms – if they persisted – have typically resolved. Your vision at 6 months is your stable, long-term LASIK outcome.
✓ All activities unrestricted ✓ Contact sports ✓ Final follow-up visit

Your post-LASIK drop protocol

Eye drops are a critical part of LASIK recovery. They prevent infection, reduce inflammation, and keep your eyes lubricated while the corneal surface heals. Missing doses can affect your outcome – set reminders and keep drops at room temperature.

Antibiotic drops
Infection Prevention
Typically prescribed 4×/day for 7–10 days following your procedure. The goal is to prevent bacterial infection during the healing window when the corneal surface is remodeling. Do not skip doses even when eyes feel perfectly fine.
Steroid / anti-inflammatory drops
Healing & Inflammation Control
Usually prescribed 4×/day for the first week, tapering to 2×/day in the second week, and once daily in week three. The steroid drop controls the inflammatory healing response and affects the quality of your final vision outcome. Complete the full course as prescribed.
Artificial tears (preservative-free)
Dry Eye & Comfort
Used as needed – often every 1–2 hours in the first week, then as symptoms dictate. Dry eye is the most common post-LASIK symptom and is amplified by DFW’s low humidity and strong air conditioning. Preservative-free formulas are preferred because they don’t irritate healing tissue with repeated use.
When drops overlap
Administration Tip
Wait at least 5 minutes between different drops to allow each to absorb properly. Apply in this order: antibiotic first, then steroid, then artificial tears last. If you wear a protective eye shield at night (recommended for 1 week), apply your final drops before putting the shield on.

Recovery considerations for Dallas–Fort Worth living

Healing in North Texas presents some specific conditions that are worth planning around. Our post-op team addresses these at every follow-up visit.

☀️
Intense UV exposure
DFW gets over 230 sunny days per year. UV exposure stresses healing corneal tissue. Wear high-quality wrap-around UV-blocking sunglasses outdoors for at least 1 month – even on overcast days. Your practice will provide protective eyewear immediately after the procedure.
💨
Low humidity & wind
Dallas-area air is notoriously dry, especially in winter and when air conditioning runs heavily. LASIK transiently reduces corneal nerve sensitivity, which reduces the blink reflex and worsens dry eye. Preservative-free artificial tears are your primary tool – use them generously in the first 4 weeks.
🌊
Lake & outdoor recreation
DFW offers Lake Lewisville, Lake Ray Hubbard, Lake Grapevine, and dozens of other recreation areas. Wait the full 4 weeks before lake or river contact. Waterborne bacteria and particles carry higher risk than treated pools and should not contact healing corneas.
🏈
Sports & active lifestyle
Dallas residents are active – golf, tennis, cycling, and running are common. Light cardio returns by day 3, most gym activities by week 2, and golf can resume by week 2–3 (wearing protective eyewear). Contact sports including flag football require 4–6 weeks. Discuss your specific sport at your follow-up.
🌿
Allergy season
North Texas has notoriously heavy spring and fall allergy seasons. Ocular allergies that cause itching and rubbing are a concern post-LASIK – rubbing a healing cornea can displace the flap. Take oral allergy medication proactively during allergy season. Do not rub your eyes for any reason in the first month.
❄️
Air conditioning
Texas summers mean constant AC exposure, which dries eyes significantly. Keep artificial tears at your desk, in your car, and at your bedside. Adding a small desk humidifier during the first two weeks of recovery can meaningfully reduce dry eye symptoms during the critical healing period.

What patients ask most about LASIK recovery

Is it normal for vision to fluctuate after LASIK?
Yes – fluctuating vision in the first 2–4 weeks after LASIK is completely normal and expected. Your corneal surface is remodeling and the epithelium (surface layer) is regenerating, which causes mild variation in how light focuses. This resolves as healing progresses. If fluctuations feel severe or worsen rather than improve over time, contact our office.
When will halos and starbursts around lights go away?
Halos, starbursts, and glare around lights at night are very common in the first 1–3 months after LASIK. They occur as the cornea heals and are especially noticeable at night when pupils dilate. For most patients, these symptoms diminish significantly by month 3 and are essentially gone by 6 months. Contoura Vision topography-guided LASIK at Tylock Nasser Vision is specifically associated with superior nighttime vision outcomes compared to standard LASIK.
How do I know if something is wrong?
Contact our office immediately if you experience: sudden significant decrease in vision (beyond normal fluctuation), severe pain that doesn’t respond to over-the-counter relief, visible changes to the eye (redness, discharge, cloudiness), or flap-related symptoms like the sensation of something in your eye that won’t resolve. Most post-LASIK discomfort is mild and expected – but trust your instincts and call us if something feels wrong. Our team is available for urgent calls.
When can I wear eye makeup again?
Eye makeup – mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow – should be avoided for at least 10–14 days after LASIK. Makeup particles near the eye carry infection risk during the healing window, and removing makeup requires rubbing motions near the eye that should be avoided. When you resume makeup use, use clean brushes and fresh product, and avoid getting anything directly on the cornea.
When do the follow-up visits happen?
Your included follow-up schedule at Tylock Nasser Vision is: next morning (required), 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Additional visits are scheduled if needed. All follow-up visits are included in your LASIK price for 12 months. These visits are important – they allow us to catch and address any healing concerns early and confirm that your outcome is on track.
